Travelling Light

A light art installation and art trail by Alice Stallard, commissioned by First Light Festival CIC for Battery of Ideas Place Partnership project. Through the transformation of discarded suitcases into small beacons of light, Travelling Light celebrated connection and engagement in the world around us whilst encouraging random moments of positivity, wonder, joy and movement in its audience.

Each suitcase repurposed for Travelling Light carries the wear and tear of its previous life and journeys and stories etched into its surface through use remain exposed revealing a sense of humanity and character. Where once they may have carried clothes, personal effects for a new life, photograph albums and other ephemera, through light, words and re-use they now carry messages of sentiment, positivity, joy and good will.

Travelling Light was installed at The Battery of Ideas, London Rd N, Lowestoft NR32 1LZ from 17 November - 16 December 2025.

Travelling Light Trail took place in 6 venues across Lowestofts cultural quarter between 17 November - 4 December 2025. Trail venues included Battery of Ideas, Lowestoft Library, Sam’s Wellbeing Hub and Cafe, Woodwork Art Cafe, Lowestoft Lifeboat Station and East Point Pavilion.

Travelling Light was one of The Battery of Ideas, 3D Commissions. The 3D Commission offered 8 Suffolk based artists commissions to create new 3D or sculptural works inspired by found materials, considering environmental and sustainable themes and prioritising the use of recycled, recyclable and natural materials.    The Battery of Ideas is an Arts Council England Place Partnership Project with the aim of creating a step change in creativity in a place and is supported by East Suffolk Council and Suffolk County Council.

Thank you to all involved in making this project a possibility.
